No one likes to see yellow, discolored teeth when they look in the mirror, yet tooth discoloration is all too common. In most cases, yellowed teeth are the result of one’s daily diet. Eating and drinking pigmented foods and beverages such as berries, spaghetti sauce, red wine, and green tea can cause the teeth to turn an unpleasant shade over time. However, even if you’re careful to brush your teeth after eating pigmented foods, you might still have a yellowish smile.
Yes, it’s possible to have teeth that naturally have a yellowish hue. Fortunately, there is something you can do about it.
Your teeth are protected by a layer of white enamel. Over time, that enamel can develop surface stains caused by your daily diet. However, some people also have teeth that naturally appear yellow, regardless of what they eat or drink. This is because the layer of dentin underneath the enamel naturally looks a little yellowish.
For some people, the coloration of the dentin is barely noticeable. Other people have a thinner layer of enamel, and so the discoloration shows through the enamel.
It can be possible to whiten teeth that naturally have a yellowish hue. However, over-the-counter whitening toothpastes and strips are insufficient. Your dentist can use professional-grade bleaching agents like carbamide peroxide to penetrate the enamel and thoroughly whiten your smile. This will also remove surface stains, contributing to a brighter smile.
Note that in some cases, yellowish discoloration may not always respond to teeth whitening. If you’ve already tried professional-grade whitening and haven’t achieved the results you desire, talk to your dentist about porcelain veneers. Veneers are an effective way to camouflage your discolored teeth. They are comprised of thin sheets of porcelain, which are firmly bonded to the visible sides of the teeth. Your dentist will shape and shade them in order to give you a customized look.
Although cosmetic dentistry treatments are the most effective way to improve the appearance of your smile, there are also a few things you can do at home to preserve the thickness of your enamel and reduce the degree of yellowness that is visible.
First, avoid using toothpaste or related products that contain activated charcoal, as this is too harsh for the enamel. Next, always use a soft-bristled toothbrush—never choose medium or hard bristles, as these will wear down the enamel on your teeth. Similarly, avoid brushing your teeth with lemon juice or baking soda in an attempt to whiten them, as it will only encourage the enamel to degrade. Always brush your teeth with gentle strokes; avoid pressing too hard.
