Huntington Station sedation dentists

Surveys indicate more than 60 percent of people suffer from dental fear. Even though you anticipate the transformation to a beautiful smile, intense fears of pain, chemical smell, drill sounds, confined spaces, and keeping your mouth open can overshadow the benefits.

Sedation dentistry is a modern solution to reduce anxiety and relax patients throughout the process. At Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, all our dentists are certified sedation dentists. Working with external board certified anesthesiologists when needed, our staff has the expertise necessary to ensure each patient will be calm and satisfied after each procedure. We offer different types of anesthesia to suit every patient and situation.

Are you a candidate for sedation dentistry?

Most individuals can safely undergo sedation dentistry, without risk. Ideal candidates:

  • Suffer from fear and anxiety about dental procedures
  • Have had a traumatic experience with a dentist in the past
  • Experience dizziness, sweaty palms, or rapid breathing during routine cleaning
  • Rarely, if ever, go to the dentist due to fear of discomfort
  • Suffer from an easy gag reflex or low pain threshold
  • Can’t sit still in the dental chair
  • Have sensory processing disorder, hyperactivity, or other special needs
  • Dislike the noises, smells, and tastes of dental care
  • Hate needles and shots
  • Experience hot/cold tooth sensitivities
  • Require a lengthy procedure or multiple procedures done at once

Being candid about your past and present medical history will help our sedation dentists choose the right type of sedation for you. According to the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, special care must be taken when selecting sedation methods for patients with heart, kidney, liver, or respiratory disease; epilepsy; sleep apnea; and diabetes.

Types of sedation offered by Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry

Sedation levels vary from minimal (where you are fully awake, but relaxed) and moderate (where you can talk but slur your words and may not remember), to deep (where you are generally asleep but can be awakened upon command) and general anesthesia (full unconsciousness).

Our Suffolk County, New York dental practice offers various methods of sedation:

  • Conscious Oral Sedation: Patients take a pill that makes them feel drowsy, comfortable, and relaxed. They are awake enough to talk and respond, but they are not the least bit concerned about what’s happening. Time seems to fly by quickly and there may be little recollection about the experience later.
  • Inhaled Minimal Sedation: The patient breathes 100% oxygen, followed by nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) through a mask, which reduces gag reflexes and saliva flow, while boosting physical relaxation. The dentist can bring you back from sedation quickly and you may drive yourself home.
  • IV Moderate Sedation: A thin needle is inserted into a vein, so anti-anxiety medication can be administered through an IV drip for a deep state of relaxation. You will feel drowsy and may even fall asleep during the procedure or forget what happened.

No  matter which type of sedation you receive, someone will be carefully and continuously monitoring your blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation levels at all times.

Sedation dentistry advantages

Sedation dentistry offers a completely different experience of reality. You’ll feel like the whole procedure lasted no more than a few minutes, even if you’re in for two or three hours of work. You’ll feel happy, calm, and receptive, rather than nervous or downright terrified. We approach dentistry with gentle hands, but understand not everyone is up for drilling, tugging, and keeping their mouths open wide. The dream-like nature of sedation dentistry can be life-changing for people who generally “do not like the dentist.”

The cost of dental sedation in Huntington Station

Cost doesn’t have to be a concern. The price of sedation dentistry varies based on the type of anesthesia used and insurance coverage, but may range from $150 to $500. Some non-IV sedation procedures may be covered, especially if it reduces the number of appointments you need. Insurers may provide coverage if you have a documented disability or diagnosed dental phobia. Our financing department will help you make arrangements for affordable monthly payments when necessary.
