What Happens After You Finish Invisalign?

17 Nov 2020 by  admin in Invisalign

If you have recently decided to get Invisalign, then you probably have plenty of questions about it, such as– what happens after you finish your treatment? To ensure that your teeth do not eventually revert to their original condition, your dentist will provide you with a retainer to wear. Apart from this, Invisalign aftercare simply means following good practices for healthy teeth. Here is what patients should know about the aftermath of the Invisalign procedure.

Why Do I Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign?

Your retainer is intended to give your entire mouth—including your gums and jawbone—an opportunity to adjust to the new position of your teeth.  By using a retainer to preserve the results of your treatment, you can help to ensure that your smile continues to look spectacular. Some patients wonder if they can simply use their final set of aligners from their treatment as a retainer, but the aligners are not intended for long-term use. Your dentist will be able to provide you with a custom-made retainer that will hold up to repeated use.

How Long Do I Need to Wear My Retainer?

For a limited period after your treatment, you will need to wear your retainer 24 hours a day. If your retainer is removable, then you can take it out while you eat or drink. In most cases, you will wear your retainer constantly for the first six months after you finish your Invisalign treatment. For the next six months, you will wear your retainer at night. After that, your dentist may advise you that you only need to wear your retainer a few nights a week.

How Can I Ensure That the Results of My Invisalign Treatment Last?

The single most important thing you can do to make sure that you continue to enjoy a bright and perfect smile is to take proper care of your teeth. Brush and floss daily, visit your dentist every six months and have any oral health issues such as gum disease treated right away. If you are wearing a removable retainer, then you can keep it clean by brushing it with a soft toothbrush every day. If your retainer is bonded, then you should take extra care to clean your teeth thoroughly.
