Invisalign is a beautiful alternative to traditional braces, making it easier, more comfortable, and less noticeable to correct misaligned teeth. However, the same as conventional braces, there are some things you will need to give up in favor of straighter teeth.
Here are some things you should not do with your new retainers:
To maximize the effectiveness, and to achieve results faster, you should leave your retainers in for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours each day. Essentially, you’ll only remove your trays for eating, drinking, and brushing. The good thing about Invisalign is that they are virtually unnoticeable and won’t hinder your look when heading for a night out, attending a wedding, or taking part in any other event.
Just as you shouldn’t ditch the trays for a day, you shouldn’t rush to the next tray too quickly, either. With digital imaging, your dentist creates a personalized treatment plan that gradually moves teeth into place using a series of trays to be worn for varying lengths of time. The idea is to gently nudge teeth into their desired location by providing a subtle, yet consistent, amount of pressure. Speeding things up could mess up the treatment plan and possibly cause additional wear (and discomfort).
Eating with your Invisalign trays can be both uncomfortable for you and damaging for your retainers. It may also make things like chewing difficult. Instead, you should practice always removing your retainers before eating— even for small snacks. This will make eating more enjoyable and save you from needing replacement trays.
In addition to always removing your trays before eating, you should also brush your teeth before putting them back in. This will avoid any food or bacteria getting trapped in them. Cleaning after every meal may seem like a pain, but at least you can eat whatever you want with Invisalign. If you’re in a tight pinch, at least try to rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush as soon as possible.
You can drink water and other beverages with your aligners intact. However, you’ll need to steer clear of hot drinks, like coffee or tea, which can warp or damage your plastic aligners. You should also avoid red wines, dark juices, or other heavily-pigmented beverages that could stain them. Of course, you don’t have to miss out on your favorite drinks completely with Invisalign. Just pop them out while drinking your morning coffee or an evening glass of wine, then brush and replace.
While there are some limitations to life with Invisalign, the temporary sacrifices are minimal compared to the joy that comes with a beautifully straight smile.
