Gone are the days when thick, metal braces were the only option for straightening teeth. These days, parents can choose between Invisalign and braces for their teens.
When it comes to straightening your teenager’s teeth, how do you know which is the better choice?
Simply put, in the question of Invisalign vs. braces for teenagers, there is no wrong answer. It all depends on your teenager’s teeth condition and personal preferences.
Traditional braces are metal brackets that are individually bonded to teeth and connected with wires and rubber bands to help move the teeth to the desired position. Most modern dentists offer stainless steel braces that can be decorated with colored rings as well as ceramic brackets that are much clearer and more subtle in appearance. A teen will need to visit the orthodontist throughout the course of the braces treatment to have the wires adjusted so the teeth can shift gradually over time.
Some of the pros of braces include:
Braces do have some negative aspects. For example, certain foods must be avoided or limited to help make sure the braces don’t come off the teeth, the wire adjustments can be painful, and a strict oral hygiene routine is key to keep the teeth healthy under the brackets.
Invisalign is a more modern approach to orthodontics that uses clear aligner trays to move and straighten teeth. These trays are custom made to each stage of a teen’s treatment plan, so the teeth move into the desired alignment gradually. Usually, a teenager wears an alignment tray for about two weeks before moving to a new tray.
The pros of Invisalign include:
However, using Invisalign for teens is not ideal in every case. Invisalign aligners can’t be used to treat severe cases of bite or tooth misalignment, and the aligner trays must be worn for at least 22 hours per day in order for the treatment to work. Invisalign might not be the best choice if a teen can’t be trusted to wear the trays for the prescribed amount of time.
Perhaps the biggest difference between braces and Invisalign is the emotional aspect. Most parents that wore braces can attest to the embarrassment and decreased self-confidence that comes with being a “metal mouth.” Many teens greatly prefer Invisalign because the aligner trays are much harder to detect. This low-profile treatment plan greatly reduces the risk of self-esteem or anxiety issues often connected with traditional braces.
For some teens, Invisalign may be a better and more convenient choice than braces. But for others, traditional braces will have a much better prognosis.
