Invisalign is one of the most popular ways to straighten teeth. With this system, you can enjoy a beautiful, straight smile in less time than you might think. Plus, you won’t have to endure the “metal mouth” look, as the aligners are transparent. And since you’ll remove the aligners before you eat, there are no dietary restrictions. If you’re thinking about getting Invisalign, here’s what you can expect from the process.
The first step in the process is to schedule a consultation with an authorized Invisalign provider. Your dentist will examine your mouth and take a scan. Instead of using traditional molds to form an impression of your smile, they will use the Invisalign iTero Element® scanner. The scan is then uploaded into the ClinCheck® software, which develops your custom treatment plan. You’ll be able to see how your smile will look once your treatment is finished.
The 3D scan of your teeth and your treatment plan are submitted to Invisalign. Your aligners will be fabricated especially for you out of SmartTrack®. This clear, plastic-based material was developed with patient comfort in mind. After your aligners are made, they will be individually trimmed to create a perfect fit. The last step is a rigorous quality check to ensure they meet Invisalign’s standards.
Once your aligners are ready, you’ll be called back to the dentist’s office to ensure their proper fit. In some cases, they will also secure small attachments to your aligners, which help them stay in place better. During this appointment, your dentist will also discuss the specifics of your treatment plan, such as:
You’ll make a follow-up appointment before you leave. Expect to see your dentist every four to six weeks to check on your progress.
You’ll be able to see your teeth gradually grow straighter over time. Remember to remove your aligners before eating, as well as before drinking anything other than water. Hot beverages can warp the plastic. Clean your teeth and the aligners before replacing them, and be sure to wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day to stay on track with your treatment plan.
Most patients are finished with their treatment once they’ve worn their final set of aligners. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to make some minor tweaks. These patients will wear refinement trays until their treatment is complete.
