How to Know When to Change Invisalign Trays

invisalign teen clear alignersOrthodontic treatment is often necessary to straighten the teeth, as few people are born with a perfect smile. Unfortunately, metal braces are unsightly and inconvenient. Plus, they can cause discomfort if the wires break free and poke at the soft tissues of the mouth. That’s why so many people have decided to use Invisalign instead.

Invisalign is a system of clear plastic aligners that gently and effectively straighten the teeth without the need for metal brackets or wires. Since the aligners are removable, you’ll also be able to eat whatever you want. Note that, while metal braces are adjustable, Invisalign aligners are not. This means that at periodic intervals, you will need to swap out the old aligners for the next set in the series. This will keep your teeth moving in the right direction.

When patients are typically told to change their trays

Before you begin treatment with the Invisalign system, your cosmetic dentist will map out your treatment. Each set of aligners must be worn in the correct sequence in order to move your teeth to the appropriate positions. You’ll need to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day to keep your teeth on track. Every one to two weeks, you will switch to the next set of aligners in the series. Your dentist will let you know exactly when to make the switch.

Remember that it’s absolutely vital to wear your aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours per day. If you don’t, your dentist will be able to tell that you haven’t been wearing them enough because your teeth won’t be on track. This may mean that you’ll have to wear your current set of aligners a little longer. If you skip wearing the aligners entirely for a little while, you might even have to go back to the previous set of aligners—so don’t throw out the old aligners, and definitely wear them for the recommended amount of time!

What happens if you break an aligner?

Your Invisalign aligners are fairly durable, but they can sometimes develop cracks if they are exposed to hot temperatures or if you’re aggressive about removing and inserting them. If your aligners develop a crack, your dentist may tell you to continue wearing the current set, but to be extra careful when taking them out and putting them back in. If you’re more than two-thirds through the current treatment cycle, your dentist may tell you to simply move on to the next set of aligners.
