Invisalign is a great option for teens and adults who want to straighten their teeth quickly. However, if you’re straightening your teeth in preparation for a special event, like a wedding or a high school reunion, you’ll still want to visit a cosmetic dentist as soon as possible.
“Everyone’s treatment time is a little different,” says Dr. Nick at Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry. “Some people achieve their goals within six months or so, while those who have more severe malocclusion might take as long as 18 months,” adds Dr. Elliot of the same dentistry practice. The average total treatment time for an Invisalign patient is 12 to 18 months.
Once your unique treatment process is planned, you will receive a series of Invisalign clear aligners, or trays. You’ll wear each set of trays in an ordered sequence. Usually, you will wear each set for two weeks at a time. Your dentist will let you know if your particular treatment differs from this standard. At the end of the two weeks, you’ll switch to the next set of trays in your series. Each tray will move your teeth about 1/10 of a millimeter.
One of the many major differences between Invisalign and traditional metal braces is that with Invisalign, you don’t have to wait until the end of your treatment to see the results. If you were to choose metal braces instead, your beautiful smile would be concealed behind unsightly metal brackets and wires. But because Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, you can see how your smile changes throughout the treatment.
Everyone’s experience is a little different, of course. Some people can see improvements in a mere matter of weeks. Others might not notice a difference for about three months.
Occasionally, Invisalign patients will end up having to wear the aligners for longer than originally planned if their teeth aren’t moving as expected. This typically happens when patients aren’t following the instructions properly. (Your cosmetic dentist will instruct you to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day.) You’ll take them out to eat, and to clean your teeth and the aligners. If you fall short of the minimum 20 hours per day, your teeth won’t move as quickly.
One of the neat things about Invisalign is that you’ll be able to see how your teeth will move and what your smile will look like at the end of your treatment. It’s all thanks to the state-of-the-art imaging software, which allows cosmetic dentists to precisely plan every phase of the treatment.
