If you are considering Invisalign to improve the alignment of your teeth, you may be wondering—how many hours a day will you need to wear them? And the answer is anywhere from 20 to 22 hours a day. This is necessary to ensure that the treatment works as planned. Here is what you need to know about the daily process.
When you wear your set of aligners for a period of one to two weeks– your teeth will gradually shift. Then, your dentist will replace them with a new set so that the process can continue. If you aren’t wearing them for most of the day, however, those changes in the position of your teeth won’t take place. Thus, your teeth may not shift on schedule, and the treatment is likely to take longer. To avoid this, keep them in place as much as possible.
You can remove your aligners at any time during the day to eat or drink. You should never try to eat—or drink anything other than plain water—with them in place. Instead, take your aligners out and put them in a safe place, then rinse your mouth—as well as the aligners after eating before you put them back in. You can also remove your aligners before you brush and floss your teeth.
Many patients wonder if they can remove their aligners at night. In fact, you should leave them in– while you sleep so that they can continue to exert pressure on your teeth and push them toward better alignment. Remember: The longer your aligners stay in your mouth, the more of a chance they have to do their job.
