What Is the Best Age for Dental Implants?

28 Aug 2021 by  Ryan Brown in Dental Implants Resources

There is no particular age when it is best to get dental implants, as long as you meet other criteria, such as having a healthy jawbone. Generally, anyone aged 18 and up, through to folks well into their 90s, can potentially reap the benefits of the latest advances in dental implants.

Dental implants are a safe and proven method for replacing missing teeth. Here’s what you need to know about how your age affects whether or not you can receive dental implants.

Patients 17 and younger are generally not candidates for dental implants

The first thing to know about dental implants is that you need to have a stable, fully developed jawbone in order to support them. Since individuals who are younger than 18 generally still have developing bones, dentists do not usually recommend that they get dental implants. If you are younger than 18 and have one or more missing teeth, then your dentist may find an alternative solution for you until you are old enough to receive implants. For instance, your dentist may recommend using a removable partial denture.

Adults 18 to 65 are good candidates for dental implants

Once you have turned 18, your dentist can at least evaluate you for dental implants. If your jawbone is not sufficiently developed, then your dentist may decide to recommend that you wait until your early 20s for the treatment. After that, most individuals will be able to undergo the implant procedure. If you have missing teeth as an adult, it’s crucial not to ignore them. The longer you have a gap in your teeth, the likelier your risk of serious complications such as bone loss, gum disease, and TMJ disorder.

Seniors 65 and older are excellent candidates for dental implants

Seniors should be encouraged to know that there is no maximum age for receiving dental implants. Indeed, individuals who are older than 65 are much more likely to have one or more missing teeth. Since missing teeth can lead to any number of oral health complications, it’s a good idea to have these teeth replaced as soon as possible. Even individuals who are in their 90s can be good candidates for receiving implants. If you are a senior who has missing teeth, you should set up a consultation with your dentist to determine whether you might be able to receive implants.
