What Are Alternatives to Dentures?

5 Jan 2021 by  admin in Dental Implants Resources

Dentures have come a long way in recent decades. Modern dentures can improve your psychological and physical health by restoring your smile and the ability to chew. By helping to bolster the support structure of your face, dentures can make you look much younger.

If you do not like the idea of wearing dentures, the good news is that you have alternatives. Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry can give you a great smile no matter which method you prefer.

Bridges

If you have lost a tooth, this porcelain or ceramic denture alternative literally “bridges” the gap in your smile. The crown created to replace the missing tooth is kept in place by the abutting natural teeth, or via metal clips.

Most bridges are fixed. This involves placing crowns on the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth, thus anchoring the replacement crown.

A bridge is not a permanent replacement, but it should last a long time. Much depends on taking proper care of the bridge. Many patients find their bridges lasting 15 years or more.

A removable bridge is a less expensive option. The metal clips holding these bridges are also removable, so the patient can take the bridge out every day and clean it.

Dental Implants

When it comes to tooth replacement, dental implants are the gold standard. Not only do they provide excellent aesthetic results, but they can reverse the bone loss caused by the missing teeth. That is because the titanium rods holding the implants are placed in the site of the missing tooth’s root, eventually bonding with the jawbone.

Dental implants require oral surgery.

We offer same-day All-on-4® treatment. With All-on-4®, you can walk into the dentist’s office with missing teeth and walk out with natural-looking replacements. This is a suitable procedure for people whose jawbones are healthy and strong enough to hold dental implant posts. Those with serious periodontal disease are not good candidates for this treatment.

However, some people may prove candidates for dental implants after undergoing a dental bone graft and sinus lift. The bone material is either synthetic or obtained from an organic source. The patient may decide to have small amounts of bone taken from their mouth or hip for use in the graft. The recovery process takes several months.

Oral hygiene for dental implants is similar to natural tooth care. Along with regular brushing and flossing, you should see the dentist at least twice annually.

Implants and Bridges

Those needing multiple teeth replaced may benefit from a combination of dental implants and bridges. By anchoring the bridge to the implant, the patient’s smile is restored at a more affordable cost. This method allows for good biting support to help reduce bone loss.
