Dental implants are the gold standard for permanent tooth replacement, giving patients the confidence and functionality to smile, speak, eat, and laugh– just as they would with a set of healthy, natural teeth. Because implants need time to integrate with the jawbone after placement, patients are asked to restrict their diets after surgery to avoid disrupting the osseointegration process.
Osseointegration is the fusing of living bone with the titanium implant. In general, osseointegration occurs gradually over four weeks to six months, depending on the health of the bone tissue and the location of the implants. If undue pressure is put on the implants by chewing hard or crunchy foods too early in the healing process, the bone fusion could be compromised, leading to premature failure.
What foods can you eat after surgery for dental implants, and how long after the procedure can patients eat and chew normally? Find out below.
In the immediate 24-48 hours after dental implant surgery, your mouth will be sore and swollen. During this time frame, it’s essential to be gentle with yourself and stick to soft, room-temperature foods. While soups are recommended, be sure they are not scalding, as hot temperatures can worsen any residual bleeding.
Here at Long Island Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we recommend the following for the first 1-2 days post-surgery:
In the following days and weeks, you can incorporate a much broader variety of soft foods, but it’s crucial to avoid the following for at least six weeks, which can undermine the healing process:
A diet of soft, relatively bland foods should be adhered to as long as your dentist recommends, and the longer you can leave the surgical site undisturbed, the better your chances of successful dental implant surgery. By weeks 2 and 3, after implant placement, you can begin incorporating some of the following solid foods into your daily meal plans. Try and include protein-rich foods– such as yogurt, eggs, tofu, meats, and cheese– to help expedite your recovery.
When preparing pasta, meats, or vegetables, be sure to cook them until they are fork-tender and easy to cut and chew:
After the jawbone has successfully fused with the titanium implant, you can go back to your normal diet and enjoy your favorite foods. Because the healing process varies from patient to patient, this is a highly individual time frame, which can be 3 to 6 months. While this may seem like a long time to forego caramel popcorn or your go-to chips, the beautiful results will be more than worth the wait!
The good news is that– even with these restrictions– there is a plethora of delicious foods that can be enjoyed during your recovery process!
