Dental bridges look completely natural and will effectively restore your beautiful smile.

If you’ve lost a tooth, you already understand how frustrating it can be to get through your daily routine. It can be tricky to bite into food and chew it properly. Speech can be affected. Not to mention the damage a missing tooth can do to your self-confidence. You deserve better. Dr. Nick and Dr. Elliot of Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry want to give you the healthy, beautiful smile you deserve. For many of our patients with missing teeth, our Long Island dentists recommend a dental bridge. It provides an immediate fix for your smile, doesn’t require surgery, and can last for many years to come.

What are dental bridges?

Dental bridges acquired their name because they literally bridge the gap in a person’s smile. There are different types of bridges, but the general idea is to create a crown (called a pontic) to replace the missing tooth. That crown is then anchored, or held in place, by the adjacent, natural teeth or by machined metal clips. Dental bridges are typically made from porcelain or ceramic.

Many patients at Long Island Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry come to us to have dental bridges placed because they are frustrated with the limitations of an incomplete smile. Dental bridges are an effective solution to tooth loss, especially for patients who are not good candidates for a dental implant.

What’s the difference between dental bridges and dental implants?

The most permanent and desirable solution to tooth loss is a dental implant. Since the implant is inserted directly into the jawbone, it stimulates the bone every time you chew. This helps preserve bone density. In contrast, a dental bridge sits on top of the gum line. Dental bridges also have a limited lifespan, although taking good care of them will help them last longer.

While a dental implant is often the best choice for patients, not everyone is a good candidate for them. In addition, not everyone wants to undergo the oral surgery required to place an implant. When implants aren’t a good option, dental bridges can be a great choice. Just like implants, bridges look completely natural and they will effectively restore your beautiful smile.

Are there different types of dental bridges?

Yes, there are a few types of dental bridges. The main types are fixed dental bridges and removable dental bridges.

Our Long Island dentistry practice often recommends fixed dental bridges for patients who desire a convenient solution that most closely mimics the natural tooth.

Fixed dental bridges are non-removable; they will be in place for their entire lifespan. A fixed dental bridge involves placing a permanent crown on each of the adjacent teeth. These two crowns serve as anchors for the pontic, which replaces the missing tooth.

To perform this nonsurgical procedure, the dentist carefully shaves away some of the enamel from the adjacent teeth so that there will be enough space to slip on a crown. Then, the dental bridge is firmly cemented in place. A fixed dental bridge can last up to 15 years with good care.

The other main type, the removable dental bridge, often appeals to patients who are on a tight budget. Removable dental bridges are much like fixed bridges, except that they are not cemented in place. Instead, they are anchored with metal clips. Patients must remove these bridges daily for cleaning. Although this option isn’t as convenient as a fixed bridge, removable bridges still provide the same natural-looking results our patients in Huntington love!
